Autism is a complex, neurodevelopmental condition that impacts how a person experiences the world around them. Autistic individuals often think, feel, and interact in ways that may differ from neurotypical people
The term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to the broad range of ways autism can present. It helps us understand that every autistic person is unique, with their own strengths and challenges. While the term “disorder” is part of the medical diagnosis, many prefer terms like “autism” or “autism spectrum condition” to emphasise the individuality and not focus solely on difficulties.
To be diagnosed with autism, certain behaviours need to be present:
While these characteristics can sometimes create challenges, they often come with incredible strengths. Many autistic people have exceptional focus, creativity, problem-solving skills, and deep passions. With the right understanding and support, autistic individuals can thrive and lead fulfilling lives. This means creating environments that respect their needs and celebrate their differences. The goal of teaching behavioural targets is to help students develop adaptive behaviours that promote independence.
Links to Life acknowledges each individual’s personal preference to use identity first or personfirst language to describe themselves or their loved one. We interchangeably use both language conventions and therefore refer to both autistic children and children with autism.
